The Lunar Cycle: Why Have We Always Followed the Moon?

There is something rather strange about the Moon.

We know what it is. We know how far away it is, what it is made of, why it shines, why it appears to change shape throughout the month and even how to calculate exactly when it will rise, set, disappear into an eclipse or return as a thin crescent in the evening sky.

And yet, for something we understand so well, the Moon still seems to hold a rather extraordinary place in the human imagination.

We still look for it.

We name its phases. We build calendars around it. We tell stories about it. We associate it with gods and goddesses, fertility, death, transformation, madness, love and mystery. We watch for the first crescent after the darkness of the New Moon and wait for the Full Moon to brighten the night.

There is something about the Moon that has always made us look up.

Perhaps it is because, unlike so many things in the natural world, the Moon gives us something we can actually see changing in a remarkably predictable rhythm. Night after night it moves through the sky, growing from a barely visible crescent into a bright Full Moon before gradually disappearing again.

Then it begins all over.

And perhaps that repetition is part of what made it such a useful way of understanding time.

A Month Written Across the Sky

The lunar cycle, sometimes called the synodic month, is the period from one New Moon to the next. It lasts approximately 29.53 days, although the Moon itself takes about 27.3 days to orbit the Earth relative to the distant stars. The difference exists because while the Moon is travelling around Earth, Earth is also travelling around the Sun, meaning the Moon has to travel a little further before the same Sun-Earth-Moon alignment happens again. 

That changing relationship between the Sun, Earth and Moon is what creates the phases we see from here.

The Moon isn't actually changing shape, of course. Half of it is always illuminated by the Sun; what changes is how much of that illuminated half we can see from Earth as the Moon moves through its orbit. 

From the darkness of the New Moon, a small crescent appears and slowly grows. The crescent becomes half illuminated, then more than half, until eventually the entire visible face appears bright at Full Moon. From there the process reverses, with the illuminated portion shrinking through the waning phases until the Moon disappears once again.

It is a remarkably simple cycle.

And perhaps that simplicity is exactly why humans noticed it.

Long before clocks and calendars sat on our phones, the Moon was up there doing something very useful: keeping time.

The regularity of its phases provided a natural way to divide the passing year into manageable periods. Many ancient calendars were based around lunar months, and the word month itself is closely connected to this old relationship between the Moon and the measurement of time. 

It wasn't just something beautiful in the night sky.

It was a clock.

Following the Moon

For people living much closer to the rhythms of the natural world than many of us do today, knowing where you were in the lunar cycle could be useful.

The Moon helped mark the passage of months and, alongside the Sun and the changing seasons, could help people keep track of the wider year. Lunar observation became woven into calendars, agriculture, navigation and religious traditions.

The relationship between the Moon and time has survived in many different forms. The Islamic calendar, for example, is based on the lunar cycle, with months beginning with the sighting of the new crescent Moon. The appearance of that first visible crescent remains important in determining the timing of religious observances including Ramadan and Eid. 

Other calendars have found different ways to balance lunar months with the solar year. The ancient Greek Metonic cycle, for example, used a pattern of 12 lunar months plus an additional seven months over a period of 19 years to keep lunar months aligned with the seasons.

It is fascinating to think about this when we look at the calendar hanging on the wall today.

The dates might look fixed and ordinary to us, but underneath them are centuries of people trying to make sense of the same repeating movements in the sky.

The Moon and the Tides

The Moon's influence isn't limited to the way we measure time.

Its gravity also plays a significant role in the movement of Earth's oceans. Together with the Sun and the rotation of Earth, the Moon's gravitational pull produces the tides we see around our coastlines. When the Sun, Earth and Moon are aligned around the New and Full Moon phases, their gravitational effects combine to produce larger tidal ranges known as spring tides. 

For people living alongside the sea, this connection would have been impossible to ignore.

The Moon wasn't simply something in the sky.

It was connected to something happening beneath their feet.

The tide would come in and go back out. The Moon would wax and wane. The seasons would turn. The same patterns would appear again and again, and humans have always been rather good at noticing patterns.

Perhaps we couldn't resist giving those patterns meaning.

When the Moon Became More Than a Clock

It isn't difficult to see how the Moon moved from being a practical way of measuring time into something much more symbolic.

If the Moon could disappear and return, grow and shrink, brighten and darken, it became an obvious symbol for change and renewal.

If it influenced the tides, perhaps people wondered what else it might influence.

And if it appeared to change while remaining the same object in the sky, perhaps it became a natural metaphor for the things in our own lives that seem to move through cycles too.

Across different cultures and periods of history, the Moon has been connected with deities, fertility, protection, death, rebirth, the passage of time and the mysterious parts of human experience. Beliefs about the Moon's influence on human health and behaviour are also ancient and widespread, although many of the stronger modern claims about the Full Moon affecting behaviour are not supported by good scientific evidence.

That distinction is important.

The folklore is fascinating without needing to pretend that every old belief was scientifically correct.

In fact, I think the difference between what people observed, what they believed and what we understand now is one of the most interesting parts of studying lunar traditions.

We can know that a Full Moon isn't causing people to behave strangely simply because it is Full, while still being fascinated by the fact that people have believed this for centuries.

We can understand why the Moon changes appearance without losing the wonder of watching it happen.

The explanation doesn't necessarily take the magic away.

Why Do We Still Follow It?

This is perhaps the part I find most interesting.

We don't need the Moon to tell us what day it is anymore.

We have clocks, calendars, phones and weather apps. We can find out the exact date of the next Full Moon without even stepping outside.

And yet people still check.

We still notice when the Moon is particularly bright. We still photograph it. We still look for the crescent after sunset. We still talk about Full Moons and eclipses and Supermoons. We still give them names and meanings.

Perhaps because the Moon offers something that our modern calendars don't.

A sense of return.

The New Moon will come again. The crescent will grow. The Full Moon will arrive. Then the light will slowly disappear and the cycle will begin again.

There is something comforting about that.

The world around us can feel incredibly fast and unpredictable, but the Moon continues along its familiar path regardless. It doesn't care what day we've had or how long our to-do list is. It simply keeps moving.

Maybe that is why humans have followed it for so long.

Not because we needed to understand every part of it, but because it gave us something steady to look towards.

The Lunar Cycle Today

Of course, the way we talk about the Moon today is a mixture of many different things.

There is the astronomy: the actual movement of the Moon around Earth and the changing relationship between the Moon, Earth and Sun.

There is the history: the calendars, observations and practical uses that developed around those movements.

There is the folklore: the stories, superstitions and traditions that grew around something that must have seemed extraordinary when watched from a dark landscape with no streetlights or glowing phone screens to compete with it.

And then there is the modern spiritual relationship with the Moon, where the different phases are often associated with intentions, growth, release, reflection and renewal.

These aren't necessarily the same thing, and I think it is useful to keep them separate.

We don't need to claim that the Moon has supernatural powers to find meaning in its cycle.

We can simply use the cycle as a reminder.

A reminder that things change.

That darkness doesn't necessarily mean an ending.

That growth takes time.

That there are periods for beginning things and periods for letting them go.

And that sometimes the most natural thing in the world is to disappear for a little while before beginning again.

A Cycle, Not a Straight Line

Perhaps that is what makes the Moon such an enduring symbol.

We tend to think about our own lives in straight lines. We are born, we grow up, we move forward, we achieve things, we make plans and we are constantly encouraged to become the next version of ourselves.

The Moon doesn't really work like that.

It returns.

It grows and shrinks, disappears and comes back. It doesn't seem particularly concerned with the idea that everything has to be bigger, better or further along than it was before.

There is something rather lovely about that.

Maybe we don't always have to be moving forward.

Maybe sometimes we can simply move through.

The lunar cycle doesn't promise that every phase will be bright. It doesn't pretend that darkness isn't part of the process. It simply continues, one phase following another, until eventually the light returns.

And perhaps that is why, after thousands of years, we are still looking up.

Not because we need the Moon to tell us what to do, but because somewhere along the way we learned that there is something comforting about having a cycle to follow.

The Moon changes.

The seasons change.

The tides change.

And so do we.

Perhaps we have always followed the Moon because, in some small way, it reminds us that we are part of something that has been turning long before we arrived and will continue turning long after we are gone.

All we have to do is look up every now and then to notice.
